“When He Says There’s No Law to Try Terrorism, He Doesn’t Know He’s a Terrorist” – Agomuo
Barrister Darlington Agomuo has spoken out on the ongoing debates surrounding terrorism-related prosecutions in Nigeria. According to him, individuals facing such allegations aren’t entitled to determine the legitimacy of their own cases.
Agomuo made these remarks during an interview on Voice of the People TV, where he addressed claims that Nigeria lacks adequate legal provisions for trying terrorism offenses. He argued that the country’s legislative framework provides clear guidelines on terrorism-related charges and that it’s the courts’ responsibility to decide the applicability of those laws.
“The assertion that Nigeria has no law to try terrorism suspects is misplaced,” Agomuo said. He emphasized that public commentary can’t override due process and that concerns about fairness or legality should be addressed through legal channels.
Agomuo cautioned against politicizing terrorism cases, stating that it could undermine public confidence in the legal system. He insisted that the courts are the only legitimate arbiters of guilt, innocence, and procedural correctness.
